Where Are We?

What the hell is going on?

I just have some some things I want to put out there:

-- I don't appreciate it when a guy hits on me, in a loud manner, while attending my family's function as a guest.

  • Please, do not "holla" at me while I'm standing next to my grandmother, and again when I'm with my two 10-year-old cousins.
  • Also, I was just a bit peeved when you asked for my number in my Aunt's kitchen as I was trying to enjoy a meal. No, you can't call me sometime.
-- Stop sending me mass text updates about your personal life.
  • I've said it before, I hate them.
  • They should only be used when inviting people to an informal party.
  • They're impersonal, annoying and almost always a waste of the 3 seconds it takes to read.
  • I did the math and I spend around 1 hour, 5 minutes per year reading unwanted updates about the most mundane moments of your life.
  • If you want multiple people to know that you're watching Gilmore Girls and eating Teddy Grahams: GET A TWITTER ACCOUNT. That's exactly what Twitter is for. It takes like 5 mins to sign up. Please, do it. I'll even follow you. Pinky promise.
  • If you won't do that, please tell me how to be taken off your to text list.
-- Has everyone forgotten how to chew with their mouths closed?
  • Seriously, WTF?
  • Also, could you not crunch in my ear? Por favor y gracias.
-- Can we [women] stop being so dependent on having an other?
  • If you're in a relationship: Great, now can you talk about something else, please?
  • If you're in a relationship and still maintain your independence: Kudos.
  • If you've recently ended a relationship: It's not the end of the fucking world.
  • If you're single and looking: Stop I'm-going-to-be-alone-forever-ing when it doesn't happen right away.
  • If you're single and not looking: Good. Do "You" for a while.
  • No matter what your situation: Can we all just agree to learn how to be okay alone? That way, when we get into a relationship, we still know how to act, and when a relationship doesn't work out, we don't become blubbering, desperate and reckless.
-- Please stop telling me that I have to do something.
  • By all means, suggest your favorite things to me, I welcome it. I'll check it out when I'm good and ready to do so, or maybe I never will. Either way, it's my choice.
  • 97%  of the time, you telling me that I have to do something will guarantee that I won't do it, just out of spite.
Well, do what you want with that information.

Later gators.

You May Say That I'm a Dreamer

But I'm not the only one.

So, here we have the cover of a new issue of Vanity Fair (and, just to cover my bases, the photo was snapped by Annie Leibovitz).

A few of the girls I don't really know of, some of them I like a lot and some of them I don't mind. They're all decent in their own right (rite?). I just want to make it clear, before I get into the true topic of my post, that I don't have any strong dislike for any of the actress in that photo. I even enjoy Kristen Stewart (as long as it's not in Twilight).

On with it then?

I'm sure if you look at the picture for a moment, you'll be able to guess what's on my mind. Here's a different shot:

Well, if you don't know what I'm thinking (well, that's good because I'd be jealous of your mind reading skills), I'll just tell you what my issue is with these photos:

There's absolutely no diversity.

Does that mean that the people of Vanity Fair are racists? No.
Does that mean there are no talented, young actresses of color? Absolutely not.

What it does mean, however, is that there aren't enough diverse roles being written to include women of color. But also, that when it comes to casting, people are still a bit closed-minded when it comes to what a Hollywood "Leading Lady" should look like.

There have been 8 Black women (1 winner - Halle Berry), 2 Hispanic women (o winners) and 1 Asian woman (0 winners), nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role for the Academy Awards. The only list less diverse than that is the list of Presidents of the U.S.; and as far as winning goes, they're pretty much the same.

Keep in mind, I'm only talking about women of color in leading roles. There are a few more who have gotten supporting nominations, and quite a bit more on the men's side, but considerably less than White nominees and winners.

I think what bugs me the most about it is: Seeing the same type of women in leading roles discourages me.

I'm a pretty confident person. I know where my strengths lie. I also know that if I'm not particularly strong in some area, I can work hard at it to improve. However, I simply cannot do anything about the fact that I am a Black woman (not that I'd want to).

There were times when I had gone in for an audition and, more often than not, I had the thought, There's no part in this play for me.

Talent-wise, when it came to certain roles, I thought I matched a lot of my fellow auditionees. But some of them just had the "look" I knew the director would be looking for. i.e. The long-haired, skinny, fair-skinned woman.

I don't mind being the sidekick (it's usually more fun), but there were times when I saw someone who was more fitting for a role in the talent department, but went overlooked because they didn't have the ideal look.

It's not the director's fault all the time. Sometimes it's the writer's fault. They describe their leading lady's looks in depth when they pen the script.

It's hard, once the image is there, to get it out of your head. I'm so use to seeing White women in leading roles that when I read a book or script and picture the character, I automatically assume she's White - unless it's otherwise written. Even when I write a script, I usually see White characters rather than someone of color.

However, in my scripts or stories, I make a point not to describe the characters' features. One of my favorite things when reading is picturing the character myself, I don't want to take that away from anyone. I don't want to write a book that a little Black girl picks it up and sees herself in the character, then gets dismayed because I mention she has long blonde hair and pale skin. I'd much rather write something where any and every girl can be the lead. On the other hand, there are stories where description is necessary, of course.

And it goes every way, I don't want to describe a leading lady of any specific and have a White/Asian/Hispanic/Middle Eastern/Black girl feeling left out.

This was kind of a long, rambling post, but hopefully you all see my point. Mainly, it really just disappoints me to see how un-diverse films are, it always has. Like I said, all of those women are decent, it'd just be nice to see some color speckled in there.

I didn't mean for this post and this month to coincide, it just happened that way.

Happy Black History Month.

Who Wants to Be Right as Rain? It's Better When Something is Wrong

Have you ever heard of the show 'iCarly'? I'm sure you have. Anyway, I heard that Jennette McCurdy (who plays Sam) was coming out with an album and I thought, 'Great another Nickelodeon/Disney star who lucked into a music career as well.' and I was going to ignore her music. However, I decided to go to iTunes and check out her new single 'Homeless Heart'.

First of all, you guys, she doesn't sing the upbeat, pop stuff that every other star her age sings, she sings country. I know, ew, country, right? But, get this, the song is actually decent. Secondly, she's an awesome singer! I was extremely surprised at how well she can sing, I wasn't expecting it at all. I mean, she's a talented actress, but it's a fact that not all who excel in one area of entertainment are good in others (I'm looking at you Shaq), so I'm always a bit skeptical.

It really bugs me that Nick/Disney play all of the pop stuff and I've never heard anything from her--I just kind of happened upon it. When Miranda Cosgrove (Carly from iCarly) had a new album coming out, it was advertised a bunch. But, I don't think her full CD is out yet, so maybe that's why. However, other singers have been overlooked by Nick/Disney.

Anyhoo, I came across her YouTube channel and she posted videos of herself singing different songs. She sang an a capella version of the song 'Right as Rain' by Adele (great singer, also) and have to say, I like it better than the version Adele sings.

I have a lot of respect for singers who can sing well without all of the doctoring of the mix board. Well, I'll stop blabbing and you can judge for yourself.

My Wish List: Past & Present

I'm sitting next to my window, watching the snow fall and it makes me think of every Christmas wish I have ever made.

Wishes I Remember Making (As I Progressed in Age):

-Coming downstairs Christmas morning and seeing a puppy under the tree.
-To stay up long enough to see Santa or to just, at least, hear him leaving.
-Snow.
-Win the lottery -- Like what happens in 'To Grandmother's House We Go'.
-Rollerblades.
-A camera.
-A Bike.
-My dad.
-Snow.
-Walkman.
-Various tapes.
-TalkBoy -- Like in 'Home Alone'.
-A puppy.
-Binoculars -- Like Harriet the Spy.
-My dad.
-Snow.
-Cell phone.
-Discman
-Various CDs
-Anything my friends had -- Let's be honest.
-Snow.

Yeah, many things are repeated. And when you see the word 'snow' it separates anytime I moved to a new school level (pre-school, elem. school, up to high school). I wished for some random shit back in the day; lots of materialistic stuff. I don't wish for too many items of that sort anymore. Just books, movies or a few bucks, if anything--and books and movies are things I buy for myself anyway, but it's always nice to get them from others, and money is just something everyone can use.

I've been less materialistic about things in college. I've accepted that you can't always get what you want--and if you do get it, it shouldn't just be expected at Christmas, because that's not what the holiday is about. Now, we all know that I'm not the religious type, so don't try to call BS on what I'm saying. It really is just about being together with people you care about--whether or not you bring religion into it is your business.

Not having money makes you appreciate things so much more when you do get them. I have friends (who will remain nameless) that get things not only at Christmas, but year round from their parents. I sometimes can't stand to be around those friends. Maybe it's because I resent them for being so unaware of how their boasting makes others around them feel. Or maybe it's that I'm jealous because, shit, I want to hand various family members a Christmas list and get just about everything on it. OR (maybe), it's because they're selfish, spoiled ADULTS who bitch and moan when they only get nine presents, instead of the eleven they got last year. It just pisses me off that I've met children more grateful for the little they receive, than the adults I call my peers.

Didn't people learn anything from Veruca Salt? You can't have everything or the Eggdecater (God/Life/Karma (you choose)) will decide you're a bad egg and send you down the chute to the furnace (Hell/A life nothing but things and loneliness/Dirt broke). (Excuse the Willy Wonka reference.) (Also, excuse the obnoxious amount of parentheses in this last bit here.)

You still with me?

Where was I even?

Oh, right.

I'm glad that I have been able to go from: 'What am I going to get for Christmas?' to not even knowing what to say if someone asks, 'What do you want for Christmas?'

Family has always been the reason I enjoyed the holidays. So many people nowadays can't stand their family. Half of the time, I'm one of those people, but I try hard to give them a break during the holidays. I'm hoping this year my family--my extended family--can take a moment to pull themselves together for about 48 hours, at least. I'm so tired of all the petty crap that goes on--it makes it a burden to come home. It makes it hard for me to feel like I'm home. It's just not a good feeling.

Mother Nature has done her part by giving us the perfect setting for the storybook Christmas I have always pictured--I just hope the characters in my life can follow the story I have written in my head. So here it is...

Jamika's 2008 Christmas Wish List:

-Snow falling on Christmas morning.
-Fully functioning family at Grandma's house on Christmas.
-I just really want home to feel like home again.

Simple enough, right? Come on, Santa!

Happy Christmas...Merry New Year...Joyous Holidays,
Jamika

Don't Tell Me You're Sorry, Cause You're Not

When I know you're only sorry you got caught.

I just hate when people get called out on something and try to pretend that they're better for it when, in all actuality, they're not going to change. I hate that I let myself get hella (yeah, I said hella) peeved when certain people are just being who they are. It's just that some people are, to quote T.I., "piss poor morally." They put on this show like I'm the bad guy for speaking my mind, when they're the ones who basically asked for it when they treated me like shit.

But you put on quite a show, Really Had Me Going. But now it's time to go. The curtain's finally closing.

I think I need to avoid people for a little while. I've been really irritable today, it's not good. I just feel like I need to be away from the masses for the sake of the feelings of certain people. I need some time to get over whatever mood it is that I've fallen into. We're going to have a going away party for a friend soon, so that is when I'll take myself out of this time-out. I don't want to blame my bad mood on others, because I know it's me who controls my mood. But I want you (yes, you) to know that your fakeness is what triggered it.

Yeah, that was quite a show; very entertaining. But it's over now. Go on and take a bow.

------Anyway------

I wanted to write something to submit to the literary magazine, but I've hit a huge writer's block and it is pissing me off. I can't stand it, it's very irksome. Maybe I should just sit down and write--even if the writing is crap, at least I'll be writing. I think that'll be the best/only way to get through it. But the deadline is Wednesday and I don't think I'll be able to get something together by then.

While on the subject of writing, I was thinking of coming up with a nom de plume, a literary double...put simply, a pen name. I have a couple ideas in mind of what it could be, but nothing for sure. I read somewhere that people whose first and last names start with the same letter have more luck/success. Maybe I'll come with a name like that. We'll see, I guess. One day some alliterated name will burst on to the scene and you'll wonder if it's me. Well, I hope you'll at least think of me. No, really, think of me.

It's Christmastime--well it's December, which means I can officially start listening to Christmas music loud enough for others to hear. I sneak some Christmas music year-round, but no more hiding it now. It puts me in a good mood...something I'm in need of.

Well, I think I'll go write...or something. I just need a good case of insomnia, that's all. Say, 'Good luck, Jamika.'

Good luck, Jamika.

You're A Trainwreck

You know what I don't understand? Girls who stay with guys who treat them like S.H.I.T. (That's not an acronym, I just wanted to put some emphasis on it and italics just won't do it.) I was out with my aunt and uncle--we were with a guy that my uncle works with and his GF/Friend with benefits/chick on the side, etc. He was a jerk (to her only) the whole night. Dick (we'll call him, because that's what he is) called her a bitch repeatedly, said she was crazy, egged her on--made her feel like crap, basically. If I were in that situation, I would have peaced out. No guy is worth that kind of BS.

People (especially women) have enough issues with self-esteem to sit around and take crap from a guy who, by the way, isn't even physically attractive. So, he really has no reason to be putting anyone else down in the looks dept. That girl just needs to move on. After a while she finally called her brother to come pick her up (smart), but went and sat outside in the cold on the sidewalk (not smart). I've grown up in this neighborhood and I wouldn't sit out there at night--drunk and alone. Sad to say, but she'll probably be back in a couple of days, putting up with the same BS.

I'm getting close to finishing my screenplay. I'm excited. I want to get it done ASAP, so I can spend some time editing it over Christmas break. I also want to work on another story I've been trying to work out in my head, I think it could be fun. I can't wait to be done with this. It'll be the first longer piece of work that I've completed--I've heard it gets easier to complete full-length works once you've completed one. Not that it's ever easy. I still want to write a children's book--I think it'd be fun.

You know what's fun to say? Sheboygan! Every so often (actually pretty frequently) I come across words that are fun to say multiple times in a row. So, have at it, because it's probably one of the better ones I've come across in a while. Though, antithesis is always fun. But, in all honesty, I've said Sheboygan more times today than most people will say...well, ever.

I got a text message today from someone and it was very nice and out of character for this person. I didn't know how to respond. I was polite, however, and sent a text back--but, boy, was it tough.

It's almost Thanksgiving!

I'm Leavin', Never To Come Back Again

Wow! It's been forever since I last wrote anything.

I can't believe it's almost Thanksgiving. I haven't been home since I left for school--such a long time, it seems.

Excuse me while I rant for a moment...I try really hard not to be the type of person that tries to change the way someone is because something they do is a pet peeve of mine. However, I think it would be for the good of human life if people could learn how to close their mouth as they chew. It really isn't that hard, is it? One of my roommates chews extremely, extremely loud. I had to leave the room the other night when she was chewing gum. I'd feel bad for typing this on the Internet, where I know she could stumble upon it with little effort, but I've already told her that she chews really loudly and so I don't feel an ounce of guilt for this. But, honestly, I don't see how chewing that loud doesn't annoy more people.

I've noticed that when I hand around some people, I'm a pretty negative person. I feel like some people are just so engulfed with dislike for other people, that it's all they can talk about. I dislike people, as we all do, but I think I'm going to make more of an effort to stop talking about them so much. I'm going to stop letting them take up all of the thoughts and energy I could be putting towards something else. Yeah, I think I'll be better for it.

I submitted a ten-minute play to the KCACTF competition. I'm pretty nervous about it. I hate waiting to hear back about something. I'm also not feeling like I've got the best of luck these days. But I guess we'll see. I wish they would post something on the website that says when we could expect results.

Speaking of writing. I've been trying to finish up my screenplay for my seminar class. I'm having a hard time. I'm stuck on page 87/88 and I have to get to 110 pages. But I wrote a bit today, so we'll see how many pages that adds to it. I've found that I get more writing done when I'm not at my computer. So I basically carry a composition notebook around with me, EVERYWHERE. I get most of the writing done in my Shakespeare class and before work starts. Sometimes I write when I'm in my fiction class--which would be fine if I wasn't supposed to be paying attention to the discussion. I'm kind of doing the minimum in most of my classes because I'm so ready to just get this done with, it's all I can focus on. Even when I'm having a block, instead of working on something else, I try hard to get through it--which is probably the opposite of what I should do.

I had something else I wanted to write about, but I should probably go to bed, so I'll save it for another time.

Oh, and, Yay for Barack Obama and Joe Biden!! (Don't let the small shout out fool you, I'm extremely happy.)

It's Just One Of Those Days...Don't Take It Personal

I have been annoyed and bothered with everyone around me this week.

I'm glad it's the weekend, I plan on doing what I want and not what I felt somewhat obligated to do. I'm not hanging out with the regulars tonight. I'm hanging out with others. I'm not going to the pumpkin patch tomorrow. I'm going to the football game.

I saw High School Musical 3 at midnight--it was GREAT. I don't care what other people think about the things I like. At least I own up to it, unlike others. So what? I have the taste of a pre-teen. But you know what? I like that about myself. I can be mature when I want to be--but I know how to not take myself so seriously.

So, if you don't see me this weekend, it's because I'm off enjoying myself, without you. I'm probably not going to answer the phone or respond to your texts (except you, Mom).

Fuck Racism

There is just so much wrong with THIS.

Sometimes people surprise me...sadly, this didn't surprise me one bit.

1. The term 'monkey', in reference to Black people, is just as bad as the 'N' word.
2. He turned a simple symbol of childhood into something horribly offensive.
3. The fact that people were laughing makes me believe this country hasn't learned from its mistakes.
4. If that's what it means to be a 'good American', then I must be a horrible one, and I'm glad.

I know you can't completely judge someone by who supports them, but, if these are the kind of people that support McCain/Palin, why vote for them? We should move forward, everyone, not stay stuck in the past. Why let that portion of Americans, who still think it's okay to degrade other humans and fellow constituents, win? If that happens, they'll never see that their way of thinking is outdated and wrong.

I'm not the type of person that rambles on about politics to just anyone, but sometimes you just have to speak up, loudly and to anyone who will take a moment to listen. I hope everyone is registered to vote. Our generation is so lazy sometimes that it pisses me off. We're always complaining, always wanting a change, yet we don't do jack about it. Let's cut all the whiny bull and actually try to make a difference. When will it be enough? When will we start to get so mad that we all come together? When are we going to stop being apathetic and amused and start being appalled? I think now is a perfect time. Can we stand for something, please?

And For All These Reasons, I Have Decided to Scalp You and Burn Your Village to the Ground

This was a lazy weekend. I spent most of my time in my room watching Roseanne and random movies. Tonight I cleaned and slightly rearranged my room. It is such a relaxing feeling when everything is all tidied up. I also went to the Gallery Theatre this weekend and saw Chicago. It was really good, I'm happy I went. Definitely the highlight of the whole weekend. It was so much better than the last show I saw there, so that was refreshing.

Early this weekend, while I was at a party, someone said to me, 'Nigga, please.' Now, this really made me mad because I don't ever say it, and I'm Black. I don't particularly like it when people of my race use it, but I especially don't like it when people of other races use it. I don't like people to call me 'nigga', I don't see it as a term of endearment--I find it offensive. I know rappers use it in their songs, so if you choose to say the word while you're singing the song, go ahead, but keep it in the privacy of your bedroom. What you do in privacy is your business--keep it that way. If it's edited out of the radio/music video versions, then you probably shouldn't say it. 'Well,' you say, 'swear words are edited out as well, but we say those.' So on that note, by all means (if you must call me out of my name), call me a bitch, ho, slut, etc.--but don't call me 'nigga'. I have never been, I am not now, nor will I ever be, your 'nigga'. Thank you.

Moving along...

I'm excited that it's October because I always look forward to the '13 Days of Halloween' on ABC Family.

Schedule:

Sunday the 19th: The Witches, Gremlins, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, TMNT II: The Secret of the Ooze, TMNT III. Starting @ 11.30am
20th: The Haunted Mansion (Yeah...the one with Eddie Murphy) @ 8
21st: Scariest Places on Earth @ 10
22nd: Beetlejuice @ 8 -- I'm pretty excited for this one. I love this movie.
23rd: The Addams Family @ 8, Scariest Places on Earth @ Midnight.
24th: Addams Family Values @ 8
25th: Casper Meets Wendy (My favorite Hilary Duff movie...I should own it), Teen Witch (Another awesome movie I should own), Hocus Pocus (This one, too), Tim Burton's Corpse Bride, Scooby Doo (gag). Starting @ 11am
Sunday the 26th: Teen Witch, The Addams Family, Addams Family Values, Tim Burton's Corpse Bride, Beetlejuice, Poltergeist. Starting @ 11am
27th: Godzilla @ 8
28th: Scariest Places on Earth @ 10
29th: TMNT, TMNT II, TMNT III. Starting @ 5
30th: Scooby Doo, Scooby Doo 2: Monster's Unleashed, Scariest Places on Earth. Starting @ 7
31st: Poltergeist @ 7.30

Sadly, towards the end of the 13 days, the movies get repetitive...but oh well, it gives me a chance to catch certain movies if I miss them the first time around. I feel like they should play Hocus Pocus more than once, but oh well. I'm sure it'll be all over television this month, especially on the Disney Channel. They should also play Casper Meets Wendy more than once, too. I own The Addams Family & Addams Family Values, but I'll probably turn them on at some point.

Early Bird Catches the Worm, My Ass

Setting: My room, 6:42am. I am blissfully asleep in my comfy bed. All of a sudden, I am startled awake by a rumbling sound that only the Heavens falling from the sky could make.

Me: What the...?

-I look at my clock--6:42AM

Me: You have got to be kidding me!

rumble, rumble, FUCKING RUMBLE

Me: All right!

I sit up and reach for my window. I pull the blinds open and slide open my window. I listen to the rumbling as this mystery person continues to make noise down the last flight of stairs. I stare through my screen until I hear the noise stop and sound of a mountain bike clicking. The person walking their bike finally reaches my line of sight.

Me: HEY YOU, WITH THE BIKE!

Confused, he looks around (My window is ground level so it took him a minute to spot me). He kneels down to my level.

Him: Yeah?

Me: Do you know what time it is?

He mistakes this question for one that isn't RHETORICAL.

Him: Oh yeah, it's like 6:45.

Me: Right. And it's always like 6:45 when you parade your bike down those stairs. I'm sorry you have to wake up so early, but I perfer to not be the early bird who catches the worm, so can you pick up your bike as you come down the stairs in the morning?

He looks confused, again.

Him: Oh! You can hear that?

Me: Yes! Very much so--for three flights of stairs!

Him: Ah, my bad dude. So you want me try to make less noise then?

I give him an evil glare and then without saying a word, I shut my window and blinds and I try to go back to sleep.

End Scene.

All I know is, if I hear that God awful noise again I am going to meet him at the bottom of those stairs, dismantle his bike and shove a tire up his ass...dude.

I Want You to Want Me

Tonight's rehearsal was fun. I got to be obnoxious.

Friday I get to put on a flattering dress and be pretty.

Oh and who told the ass with the bike to drag it down the stairs at 5:30AM? Hitting EVERY stair along the way, making the most noise a human being could make with a bike that early in the morning. Next time I hear that much noise coming from him and his bike, the douche-bag had better be falling down those stairs with his bike tumbling after.

Besides That, Mrs. Lincoln, How Was the Show?

I hate setting my clock forward...I really don't want to speed up the day. The weekend has gone by quick enough.

I don't want to do ANYTHING. I have absolutely no motivation.

I have a rehearsal from 2-4 and then work from 6-8, I'm dreading them both! Not like either is really all that hard. Especially work, I sit there and watch television or play pool or something. But the thought of having to pleasantly interact with other human beings makes me want to push the next person I see in front of a car and I am NOT kidding. Luckily for them neither work nor rehearsal takes place next to a busy street.

"We're Just Talking to People About the Lord Today..."

So no cast list has been sent out still. I'm a bit nervous.

Anyway...

I was walking down 3rd street after work yesterday and I was given a picture of Jesus. Apparently, if I called the number on the back, I would be able to get a free movie about Christ. And I was told that "it is very non-denominational." and that "anyone who belives in Christ should have it." Am I a bad person if I don't have it then?

How do they choose who they give these pictures to? They walked past a person or two before they got to me. They didn't give them pictures. I tend to attract people who want to talk to me about the Lord. Latter-Day Saints and others of the Morman faith (The Morman Mafia...funny story, ask me about it sometime). Not sure why either.

The picture is actually kind of creepy and doesn't look like any picture of Jesus I've seen before. My roommate agrees. Now its sitting in our living room on top of the fan, just staring at us.

Well I gotta go, class is going to suck. 1.5 hours of learning about criticism--well I do the puzzles in the Life section of USA Today. On the bright side, after that I get to go to my tap class!
